On one occasion, as the Philistines prepared to attack Israel, God thundered and threw them into a panic. This gave Israel a miraculous victory, resulting in the prophet, Samuel, setting up a stone and naming it Ebenezer (Stone of The Help), saying, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.” (1 Samuel 7:12) Mark Batterson explains in his book Chase the Lion, “An alter reminds us that the God who did it before can do it again. It’s not just a token of God’s faithfulness. It’s a statement of faith: the God who got us here will get us there, and the God who did this will do that.”We recently moved to Marietta after God called my wife, Deb, to be the Head of School at Eastside Christian School last year. Once again, God has done exceedingly abundantly above what we could have imagined! (Ephesians 3:20) We have also come full circle, as He led me to join the staff of Grace Ministries International in Marietta twenty-five years ago. This has been a wonderful reminder of God’s faithfulness over the past three decades since we embarked on this adventure of ministry, not knowing where He would take us!This Pentecost Sunday, I encourage you to take time to remember God’s faithfulness, acknowledge His present help and look forward with faith knowing He has promised to never leave you nor forsake you. (Hebrews 13:5) You may even want to raise an Ebenezer of your own!
