Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For behold, darkness will cover the earth and deep darkness the peoples; but the Lord will rise upon you and His glory will appear upon you. (Isaiah 60:1-2, NASB)
Seasoned mountain climbers know there is an altitude above sea level at which they no longer need to worry about encountering snakes. They refer to this altitude as "the snake line," and it is usually around 10,000 feet. At this height, most trees also stop growing due to cold temperatures and a lack of moisture. Consequently, the spectacular views and lack of risk from snakes make climbing above the snake line well worth the effort! God’s intention for us as Christians is to live above the snake line, spiritually speaking. In Psalm 91, He calls this “The Secret Place” in which we are able to see from His perspective, protected from the enemy’s attacks.
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall remain stable and fixed under the shadow of the Almighty [Whose power no foe can withstand]. (Psalm 91:1, AMP)
The way we climb and ultimately live above the snake line is through thanks and praise. These are the result of learning to submit to and delight in the Lord. We then experience His protection and provision in the secret place of God’s presence!
Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore will I deliver him; I will set him on high, because he knows and understands My name [has a personal knowledge of My mercy, love, and kindness – trusts and relies on Me, knowing I will never forsake him, no, never]. (Psalm 91:14, AMP)
May God continue to reveal to us the privilege we have of living in His presence, reflecting His glory in an increasingly dark world! Keep on abiding, Steve
