On Friday, I had the opportunity to once again share with the guys at Men Step Up. It was also Memorial Day weekend, a time to pause and remember those who gave their lives for our country. In fact, remembering is an important part of our calling as men. This is evident in Genesis 1:27, “God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” The Hebrew word for male in this verse is zakar. The word zakar means to remember, call to mind or the remembering one. We are called to remember, not only that Jesus gave His life for us two thousand years ago, but also that He is Immanuel, “God with us.” In other words, God’s present is His presence!
We also celebrated communion in remembrance of Jesus giving His body for our healing and blood for our forgiveness. (1 Corinthians 11:23-26) Jesus gave us communion as a way of remembering Him. Communion is not merely a ritual, but a means of remembering Jesus’ presence. In remembering Him, not only are our actions affected, but the way we live our lives. What a privilege we have daily to live for God’s glory by remembering His presence!
Keep on abiding,
Steve
