My Life's Compass

An experienced sailor always goes to sea with a compass. A compass does one thing, it points north, but in doing so all the other points of the compass fall into place. My life’s compass is Psalm 37:4-6 “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him and He will do it. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light and your judgment as the noonday.” These verses never fail to keep me properly oriented as I navigate life.

Sometimes I neglect my compass and lose my bearings in life. At those times, I can relate to Martha when Jesus said, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things, but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42) When I look to the Lord, I get back on course. “Look to Me and be saved.” (Isaiah 45:22)

Jesus told Martha that her sister had the right perspective. Mary was focused on the one thing that was a necessity and would never be taken from her. What was that one thing? Mary’s priority was her relationship with Jesus! Martha also had a relationship with Jesus, but she had become distracted from Him. (Luke 10:40) The key to the Christian life is abiding in Christ and trusting Him to keep us on course. Jesus Himself emphasized this in telling us we must intentionally keep Him as our priority! (John 15:1-11)

Keep on abiding,

Steve
